The first "Cherry Blossom Festival" was held in late 1934 under joint sponsorship by numerous civic groups, becoming an annual event. The cherry trees had by this point become an established part of the nation's capital. In 1994, the Festival was expanded to two weeks to accommodate the many activities that happen during the trees' blooming. Pink-tie galas, street performances, parades, exhibits and a kite festival mark the festivities of Cherry Blossom.
In the past ten years, I have witnessed the best of this festival. The view along the tidal basin, the energy, the tourism, everything has been so remarkable. But this year was a disappointment. In the history of Cherry Blossom festival, there was never a time when I couldn't get a picture along the tidal basin. But this year was a different story. Pertaining to the unseasonal cold and snow, first the peak bloom was delayed and when the flowers just started to shoot, the strong winds blew them off the trees. Whatever was there, never got the chance to turn their usual bright pink, and they withered. It was so jarring not to see the tidal basin turn bright pink this year.
As much as I would have loved taking the pictures along the tidal basin, it was difficult to find the perfect pink canopy. So I just scouted a spot in my neighborhood and called it a day.
I chose some daytime sparkle to sink in the festive vibes, added a fun element with those polka dot pants and finished off with some pink kicks. What if its was hard to find that energy around me, I managed my own sartorial cheer up....
