Mold Allergy: Just the Tip of the Iceberg!

By Dotchi Latham @DotchiLatham
It seems that my internet issues are okay now. Hoping that doesn't happen again! This week, Donna really opened my eyes to an allergen I didn't think about much. Mold. I knew that cheese was made from mold and that eating mushrooms would be bad for you if you have a mold allergy... but I never realized how many foods contain mold, or how hard it is to avoid mold. Before I started researching mold as an allergy, I just thought of it as that stuff that shows up around your bathtub or toilet if you didn't clean them often enough. But then, as I researched, I realized it would be difficult to live with this allergy because of all the places you can find it. Not just the places you would think either but in foods you wouldn't think about causing a reaction. I am currently working on the list but here are a few:
  • Leftover foods
  • Tomato products (like sauce, puree, juice, ketchup)
  • Liquor, wine and beer
  • Yeast
  • Dried fruits
  • Over ripe fruit
Mold Allergy Symptoms Include
  • Wheezing
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Rash or hives
I'll add more as I learn more. Do you have a mold allergy? Am I missing a symptom?
As I learn more, I'll be posting more information. I'll have a list of foods that contain mold to post tomorrow.
