I'm in the process of putting together this year's Yoga Gift Guide (I can't believe it's that time once again), but wanted to share a few things that have caught my interest of late:
What Are We Actually Doing in Asana?
I've mentioned Matthew Remski and his What Are We Actually Doing in Asana project (WAWADIA) a few times in prior posts (here and here) so I was thrilled to see that he's crowdfunding to put all of his WAWADIA findings into a book. Here's the book prospectus. Personally, I want to see the the book published, so I contributed. If you'd like to join me, you can find the project here.
Yoga and Body Diversity
Do all yoga students look the same? Of course not! That being the case, then why are they all taught in the same manner? This wonderful article on Decolonzing Yoga -- Yoga & Body Diversity: 5 Ways to Be Inclusive When Teaching or Practicing -- reminds us that language is important (for the language we use with others mirrors the language we use with ourselves). One of my favorite frames from the article: "Not only was my body not the problem – my body was worth re-engineering the external circumstances." You don't need to be a yoga teacher to benefit from the 5 tips listed in the article. Remember -- how you talk to yourself is just as important as how you talk to others. This is one of the best yoga-related article I've read in a long time. Enjoy!
Yoga -- and Vibrancy -- at 88
And since we're on the topic of body-positive yoga, here's a little something that had me saying: "I want to be her when I grow up." This fabulous video features Phyllis Sues, and 88 year old yoga-practicing, tango-dancing dynamo. My favorite frame here is Phyllis encouraging people to listen to their bodies rather than the mind or society. Amen! If this doesn't inspire you...
Namaste!
