MILES MORALES: ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #2 Review

Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #2 picks up with the huge surprise they dropped on us last issue: Peter Parker has returned.  Bendis loves to write reaction shots that stretch many panels and this issue makes good use of it.  We get Miles in complete shock as he tries to figure out howmilesmorales2 Peter has come back from the dead.  When he finally comes around, it ends up in a fight with Peter taking back something he feels is rightly his.

We know that in the Ultimate Universe, dead is dead, so the thought many people probably thought last issue was that it was some sort of clone of Peter.  And, I think we all universally hoped it was not.  I don’t know if Bendis was just going for laughs or if he was using the next several panels to address what we were all feeling, but it made me chuckle either way.

They also throw in a little extra about Norman Osbourne returning, which is just setting up the next issue and Miles has something important to discuss with Kate.

I don’t know how to feel about this issue.  It wasn’t bad by any means.  It was just…there.  It gives you most of what we expect from a Miles comic, but it just didn’t feel like the 2nd issue of a new series.  It moved along the story, but there is usually something Marquez does each issue that really jumps out at me, but the art fit the story.  It was good, just not great.  Honestly, I felt like I was reading the middle of a 8-part series where everyone is just coasting in between huge opening and closing issues.

I love Bendis and Marquez so it feels weird to not be hugely complimentary because they have been incredibly solid throughout, but this just has the overall feeling of being slightly off.  I’m sure next issue I will be back to me loving every single thing and I’ll blame this on having a bad day.
