Mic Drop Bourbon 4 Years (Batch 3) Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

The first batch of Mic Drop bourbon was pretty good. I never got to try the second batch, done as a single barrel, but then only a little over 100 bottles of it was released – so not many folks did. However, this latest batch, Mic Drop Bourbon 4 Years (Batch 3) is their largest batch to date. Created from 37 casks (batch 1 was made from 20) it should be a tad easier to find… a tad.

The fervor that exists over these releases is quite interesting. Not un-due, but interesting in the way they generate buzz so fast and the prices on the secondary, and even retail stores, goes through the roof for it almost immediately.

Right now I’m seeing it for over $400 in some price gouging stores, and the secondary? Well, I think we’ll all be happier if we skip that conversation and just head into the bourbon review.

Mic Drop Bourbon 4 Years (Batch 3) Review: Details and Tasting Notes

In PM Spirits’s Words:

MGP uses different coopers and the 4-year, 36% rye bourbon that shined for us were systematically aged in the casks made by Zak Cooperage.

We narrowed down the batches of 4-year, 36% rye aged exclusively in casks from this specific cooper. 37 of casks of the same batch were all that was left. The remainder of batch 12E23-E05. We tasted this specific run and were impressed by the profile, the liveliness, fruit expression and elegance on the palate despite being around 56% ABV.

We bought these casks, shipped them to Strong Spirits where they were blended and bottled at full proof without the addition of any water.

Mic Drop Bourbon 4 Years (Batch 3) Review: Overall and Score

Quite nice. The Aroma starts out in a classic bourbon fashion but give it a minute and it opens into something richer and warmer; Palate follows suite and gets butterier with each sip; Finish elegantly fades out warm and buttery.

Surprisingly complex for a 4-year-old, I wouldn’t be surprised if these casks came from the top of the rick house; they seem far more mature than the number they carry. The oak is heavy, the spice is warm and it’s oily as it goes down. I love PM Spirits’ no BS approach to whiskey, it’s refreshing to read a bit of truth on a label. This is a good whiskey and I’m going to miss it when it’s gone.

SCORE: 4/5
