It’s my Mental (as Anything) 40th!
A few years (cough) ago, I turned 40. I had a little problem with turning 40 and it had absolutley nothing to do with vanity – mind you the gray hairs had arrived well before the big four-oh.
The problem was that I had ALWAYS said I would have my all-time favorite Aussie band – Mental as Anything – come and entertain my friends and I at my 40th.
No biggie.
Well, no biggie when you’re in your 20s and 40 seems another 2 lifetimes away.
Well … at age 39 and with a work colleague who had Aussie Music Industry connections, we made a phone call to the management of the Mentals. Please, please, please could they come and play in my back yard for my 40th?
“Not a problem”, management said.
“You bewdy”, I said. But ….. there WAS a problem …. a bit over $10, 000 dollars worth of a problem … and so I improvised.
Their touring schedule indicated that they were playing at a sports club for FREE about 40 minutes away from home. And soooooooo, I hired a charter bus and we took my party to the Mentals.
We started with a sausage sizzle and refreshments in the backyard before boarding the coach to the venue. It was a hoot! You can see by the pic, that they were playing just for me and my crew ;)
The Mentals are, and will remain, my favorite Aussie band ever. Accordingly, as we celebrate all things ocker this Australia Day long weekend, I’ve had the Mentals high on my playlist.
