I'm going to file this article under reasons why I wish I lived in London. Not surprising as I tend to find reasons daily, but today's reason? The Valentino: Master of Couture exhibition at Somerset House. Starting one week from today, one of London's premier art and creative spaces, Somerset House, is exhibiting an exclusive look at the genius that is Valentino, the man and the atelier. The exhibit is separated into three sections, highlighting the different aspects of his greatest works. The first section is a look behind the curtain at the main, using Valentino's private photographs to delve into his inner world. The second section, and I think most exciting, is a gallery of over 130 of Valentino's most famous, and exquisite, haute couture pieces. The word gallery doesn't do justice to what this experience will be like. Patrons will actually be able to walk among Mr. Valentino's creations, giving those lucky few a rare up-close look at the unparalleled craftsmanship that he is famous for. And from seeing the preview photos of a few of the pieces, you will even recognize a few gems from international red carpets and galas. (The stunning back dress with white V-panel, for instance, was worn by Julia Roberts when she won her Academy Award.) To cap off what sounds like a glorious experience, the final section of the exhibit will show the creation of the immaculate wedding dress worn by Princess Marie Chantal of Greece at her wedding to Prince Pavlos in 1995. Every inch of this stunning haute couture creation, designed by Mr. Valentino himself, was stitched by hand at his Roman atelier. There will be a series of short films showing the evolution of the piece from idea to final creation, as well as several samples of the garment on display. If you do happen to live in London, I am demanding you go see this exhibition and let me know how beautiful it is in person. To learn more about it or to purchase tickets, click here. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
