For some reason the marquise gets a bad rap. It’s really not fair, because they’re incredibly beautiful when done right. True, one with the wrong cut will get “the bow tie” effect, where the center of the diamond’s facets look dark, like a black bow tie. But for the most part they’re lovely. It’s a very unique shape you don’t see that often anymore (they were basically the cushion cuts of the 70’s and 80’s though) making it perfect for the bride who wants something different. They’re also one of the shapes that appears larger than their carat weight, thanks to its elongated cut. And you know I’m a sucker for symmetry, so the matching points at either end seal the deal for me. But in case you still need some convincing, check these out.

Three big marquise lovelies, two in art deco halo mountings, one set with trillion cut diamonds on either side.

A single shot of the index finger ring from the first shot. It’s one of my favorites! The marquise diamond is due for a comeback.
This one isn’t an engagement ring, but I’m sneaking it in here anyway. This gorgeous wedding band features 1.15ctw of marquise diamonds on an anniversary band. Diamonds are approximately H/I in color and VS-SI1 in clarity, all set in 14 karat white gold.
This pretty pink stunner is a GIA certified 3 carat Natural Fancy Light Pink-Brown marquise diamond. It’s set in rose gold and surrounded by a white gold and white diamond halo on a split shank diamond band. Accent diamonds are Approximately 0.74ctw of Round Brilliant Diamonds, Diamonds are G/H in color and VS in clarity. The lovely hand carved setting is platinum.
Another pink beauty, this one gets a boost from even more pink diamonds in the halo and a brighter shade of pink gold. The center stone is a .70ct Natural Light Pink Marquise Shaped diamond. Diamond is SI in clarity. The halo’s pink diamonds are .19ctw of natural pink round brilliant diamonds. The side stones are two beautiful white trapezoids weighing .21 carats total, and the band is set with another .11ctw of shared prong round brilliants, all in 18 karat white gold.
Finally, this sapphire and marquise diamond ring is one of my favorites. The Art Deco style setting holds .20ctw of sugarloaf sapphires invisibly set in a kite-shaped halo around the center stone. The main diamond is a 1.59 carat I/J color with an SI2 clarity grade. The round brilliant diamonds set in the halo and shanks weigh an additional .93ctw. The platinum setting features beautiful milgrain detailing on all of the top-facing details, giving this modern-recreation of an antique style even more authenticity.
