Many Study Suggests That There Is a Rise in Male Suicides

Recent studies have shown that there has been a steady raise in the number of male suicides. Office for National Statistics(ONS) clearly shows that the deaths from suicide for men in England and Wales have increased. Currently, it is 16.9 deaths per 100,000 men. It is the highest level since 2000.

Men are most likely to die of suicide while most woman only tend to experience suicidal thinking. In 2017 in the United States, over 47,000 people have died by suicide, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many studies also suggest that suicide is considered the 10th overall cause of death. According to National Center of Injury Prevention and Control, in 2015, suicide was the 7th major cause of death in American men.

Men account for three quarters of the death by suicide and there has been sharp rise in suicide rate among men aged 45-49.

There are several factors why middle aged men are most likely to commit suicides. This includes being affected by social isolation, alcoholism, and economic adversity.

Many research projects suggest that the pandemic might worsen the situation as the number of people who are experiencing depressive symptoms have doubled. One in five adults have reported problems such as low mood, anxiety, and fatigue.

Many studies say that middle aged men with financial struggles are likely to be at the risk from suicide due to the pandemic.

A spokesperson from the Samaritan Charity mentioned that it is not certain that male suicide rates will increase as a result of the Coronavirus, however we all are aware how the pandemic is affecting people's lives intensifying some risk factors for suicide.

Though it is a serious problem, we can still prevent it. There are some important things we all must understand about male suicides. These are a few things we can do, if we get to that our loved one is having suicidal thoughts.

Some of the Common Risk Factors for Suicide Are:

  • Unemployment
  • Divorce or Breaking up in a relationship
  • Being Bullied
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Mental illnesses such as depression
  • Mental Trauma
  • History of any physical or mental abuse
  • Usage of any forms of drugs to cope with relationship the pressure of work and other problems
  • Social isolation

Men are always believed to stay strong and brave that sometimes limit themselves to ask for any help even during tough times. The gender norms about men constantly put them under pressure and make them hesitant to ask out for help.

Men are often told not to express their feelings. Hence, keeping their stress to themselves often leads to depression and anxiety.

Men do not come out to seek help. They are less likely to self-monitor and self-treat their problems.

Men are most likely to treat themselves with alcohol and other drugs. This at some point leads to addiction.

Preventive Measures:

    If you notice any symptoms of depression such as anxiety, irritability, and social withdrawal, you might offer your help. The thought that someone is there to listen and help them out can create a huge relief from the suicidal thoughts.
    Do not pass comments on their thoughts. Try to understand them and take them to a good therapist.

Men must understand that it is okay to express their feelings. Society's expectation about men being stronger mentally and physically must be changed as this puts them under pressure. There are several advanced treatments available to overcome such situations. If you find any symptoms of suicidal thoughts, it is okay to reach out for help. It must be understood that depending on alcohol or drugs just leads to addiction and is not a permanent solution. Let's not be stuck in the circle created by society. This way can gradually decrease the risk of male suicides.
