MAKE post-impression concept collection Erik Madigan Heck + Sam Addington, celebrating the beauty in unconventional collaborations, MAKE once again unites a cutting-edge make-up artist with a modern-day artist in an effort to foster artistic expression and a new vision of color. MAKE’s second artist collaboration brings together the work of photographer/filmmaker Erik Madigan Heck and New York based make-up artist Sam Addington for a collection influenced by an original new series of abstract landscapes with lush depth and color titled “Post-Impression.”

“I think about how I use color in my photographs and films, and what inspirations I’ve drawn upon to lead me in my specific use of color,” says Heck, the 29 year-old wunderkind who received the International Center of Photography’s 2013 Infinity Award for his work and has collaborated with the likes of the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, Dries Van Noten, Valentino Couture, and Rodarte.

“I find my eye always returning to the Impressionists when looking for color inspiration, and in particular to the painters Monet, Degas, and Vuillard. Their vibrant, effortless use of color both depicts the contemporary in a striking new manner for their time, while aimed towards a more abstracted sense of beauty – all by their new application of color and gesture.”

Inspired by the Impressionist movement, pastoral surroundings, and the chromatic palette that exists within nature, Heck has updated Impressionist artist methodology in his own work. Especially relevant to the photographer is the historical shift in medium from painting to photography in the late 19th century, and how the “death of the painting” radically shook the art world. For this collection, Heck experiments with Polaroid 59 film, both heating and cooling it to produce highly saturated, rich color and empyrean warmth.

This crafted photographic technique has produced striking contemporary landscapes: unique interpretations of New York’s Hudson River Valley, where the series was shot. “My work subtly attempts to erase the technological time stamp from photography through exploring and abstracting its historical relationship to painting,” says Heck. “Ultimately the resulting works exist as a new hybrid style, not quite belonging to either medium. This new series of work illustrates this point, where the resulting landscapes exist in a state of pure obscurification, transformed from their photographic origins into painterly color studies.”

Heck and Addington’s collaboration brings to life a unique color palette that resonates with both artists, and is deeply rooted in New York. “My favorite part of the process was researching the subject matter; becoming familiar with Erik’s style, techniques and seeing his inspiration come to life as we created a range of looks,” says Addington.
