Another young MGP rye whiskey, this Lost Republic Rye Whiskey hails from Indiana like so many of its siblings on the market, but unlike many of those it isn’t aged in Indiana. At least some part, or all, of the rye is aged in California where Lost Republic is located. Given that California isn’t known for the kind of wild temperature swings like KY that matures whiskey you can probably see where this review is heading.
Healdsburg, California averages a summer high of 90 and a winter night low of 40 and while that sounds like a lot, you’re not getting the same expansion of baking inside corrugated metal rickhouses in the humid summers, drawing the whiskey deep into the barrel. You’re also not getting the deep cold winters that produce snow and contract the barrels tightly, pushing the deep oaky liquid back out. But you know what? I love that they’re trying.
Lost Republic Rye Whiskey Review: Details and Tasting Notes
In Lost Republic’s Words: Lost Republic Rye Whiskey
“Straight Rye Whiskey. A glass full of our rye whiskey will offer the nose cherries, tobacco and lemon zest. A sip will reveal a sweet and spicy balance of flavors including raspberries, toffee, cloves and ginger. Expect a strong finish that will leave vanilla on your palette for a while. Sip straight, or use this complex combination of flavors to mix an intriguing cocktail. May we suggest a Manhattan tonight? Or maybe an Old Fashion? Or maybe… any cocktail that uses whiskey.”

Lost Republic Rye Whiskey Review: OVERALL
Umm… dang… this Lost Republic Rye Whiskey is something else. It’s supposedly young MGP rye, but it smells and tastes more like a young craft rye. I don’t get much out of this at all. It isn’t exciting, elegant or… well.. much of anything. Just not a fan of this at all.
