I’ve considered Lone Star Texas Grill to be the official restaurant of Sound Check, mainly because it’s hands down our favorite place to eat both at festivals and at their restaurant locations.
My wife and I were recently invited to come out and sample their new Tex-Mex menu items at the Kanata location to sample the chain’s new Tex-Mex menu items. Now normally when it comes to food I’m pretty old-fashioned. I have my favorite menu items and that’s pretty much what I stick to, at Lone Star it’s either Fajita’s, Steak Quesadillas or the occasional Enchilada. Of course the chips and Con-Queso are standard fare for every visit, even my 6-year-old is certain to order it on the off-chance we forget.
Now I’ve never considered myself to be a food blogger but since Lone Star was nice enough to invite us out I figured the least I could do is write a formal blog about it as a thank you for the invite and who knows it might lead to more food blogs in the future.
As part of our invitation we were offered the Southern-Fried Avocado Wedges appetizer, two Cabo Tacos and a choice of a main course dish from the rest of the menu.
Southern-Fried Avocado Wedges
Now when you think about avocado you generally don’t immediately think “I wonder what these would taste like deep-fried”. Well somewhere in the Lone Star test kitchen one of their brilliant chefs thought just that.
I’ll admit that I’m not a fan of guacamole so the first thought of this appetizer wasn’t very appetizing but I was invited as Lone Star’s guest and I wasn’t about to turn down their offer without at least sampling them, and boy am I ever glad that I did.
Served with Tomatillo Ranch dipping sauce fresh hand-cut avocado, battered, tossed in Lone Star’s southern spices and golden-fried so they literally melt in your mouth with every bite. The combination of flavours when dipped in the dipping sauce is virtually indescribable other than to say it’s probably one of the most exciting flavours I have tasted in a long time.
Lone Star Texas Grill Cabo Tacos
The main course offering was the new Cabo Taco along with a selection of our choice from the main menu. When you think of tacos you would think that two taco’s wouldn’t go very far between two people so we were going to order two main course dishes to go along with the tacos. Staff quickly assured us that the two tacos and the enchilada we ordered to go along with them would be more than enough to fill us and boy were they right.
I love Taco’s, in fact it’s always been a favorite in our house, but let me tell you these Cabo Tacos take taco to a whole new flavor level. Lone Star’s Cabo Taco’s are made up of Mesquite-grilled chicken with bacon, Jack cheese, Taco slaw and fresh avocado, topped with pepper crema, cilantro and crispy corn tortilla straws on two fresh-baked flour tortillas, brushed with Lone Star’s house-made tomatillo & Poblano pepper sauce. Served with refried beans and Mexican rice. All the ingredients combine to form a flavor party in your mouth.

Even though at the end of it all we were stuffed beyond full what’s a visit to Lone Star without desert? We topped everything off with the Chocolate Brownie Señor, in case that isn’t descriptive enough it’s a warm double chocolate brownie served with vanilla cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
If you’ve never had Lone Star before stop what you are doing visit www.lonestartexasgrill.com, find a location near you and go! Good news is you can also find Lone Star at many major music festivals including Ottawa Bluesfest and Boots and Hearts Country Music Festival.
Special thanks to Lone Star Scout for the invite and the staff at Lone Star Kanata for the fantastic service and meal. We are already looking forward to the next time.
