Dejected for being overlooked for the spearhead of BJP’ election campaign committee, veteran party leader L K Advani on Monday stepped down from all the party posts – the national executive, parliamentary board and the election committee.
The BJP leadership on Sunday had appointed Narendra Modi as the chairman of its national election committee. The move is seen as the categorical indication that Gujarat chief minister will be party’s candidate for the premiership in the next year’s general elections.
The senior BJP leader, whose name hasn’t been exposed, sent a letter to party president Rajnath Singh to inform him about Advani’s resignation.
Advani, 85, in his letter to Rajnath Singh, said: “No longer do I have the feeling that this is the same idealistic party created by Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Deendayal Upadhyay and A B Vajpayee.”“Most BJP leaders are concerned just with their personal agendas,” added Advani, who is one of the founding members of BJP.
It for the third time in eight years that Advani has resigned from the party posts including once over a massive a controversy over the his applauding of Pakistan’s found Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
Advani first resigned in June, 2005 when he came under fire for describing Mohammad Ali Jinnah as one of the “very few who actually create history”.
Advani not attended the this weekend’s BJP executive meet in Goa as a sign of unhappiness over giving party’s stewardship to Gujarati strongman Modi.
It is believed that spy agency RSS has played a pivotal role in sidelining Advani from the election campaign.
