I’m a big fan of Deri Dolls, which are super cute customisable little felt dolls made by the very lovely Andreia in Portugal and I’m sure that many of you are familiar with them as well as I think Andreia has made dolls from pretty much every era of history by now!
I have a few ideas for future commissions but decided that my first Deri Doll really had to be a miniature version of my beloved Henrietta Anne Stuart, heroine of my novel Minette. It took me a while to decide which of her portraits the doll should be based on but I eventually settled on the gorgeous Nocret painting that hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh as that also linked it to one of my favorite cities as well as one of my favorite ladies from history.
My doll arrived on my birthday last week and I’ve been longing ever since to show her off to you! Isn’t she lovely? I know that the Nocret makes it look like Minette had dark hair like her brother Charles, but actually she shared the same colouring as her brother James and had the lovely auburn hair of her great grandmother Mary Queen of Scots, which is here represented by the most amazing bouncing curls.
Although I said that I didn’t mind about the huge ermine lined and fleur de lys embroidered mantle that Minette wears in the portrait, I love that Andreia still incorporated hints of them in the tiny sleeves of the doll’s dress. It really is a beautiful and really lovely piece of work and one that I will be very proud to have on display.
I bet you can guess who my next doll is going to be!
