Barcelona swashbuckler Lionel Messi is looking to cross another milestone as his latest tally at Spartak Moscow put him just five goals away from Gerd Müller’s record of 85 goals in a single calendar year. Mueller set that record in 1972 playing for Germany and Bayern Munich.

Messi scored his 79th and 80th goals of 2012 in Barcelona’s 3-0 victory at Spartak Moscow on Tuesday. The success moved the top Spanish club to the knockout stage of the Champions League for 9th consecutive season.
