My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is a short book, a dystopian novella if I may say so, which is a prequel to Marie Lu's book Legend. There are currently three books in the dystopian series -- Legend, Prodigy, and Champion. This novella is meant to give readers of the series of books a background of Day and June's life.
Both Day and June are twelve year olds living in the Republic but are living very different lives. Day is a runaway and he is barely able to feed himself. He has just escaped from the hospital where he was being experimented upon after he failed his "trial." Day must hide and try to survive because if they find out he has escaped, they may go after his family.
June is a prodigy who has just topped the "trials." She is the youngest ever cadet to have been allowed entry into Drake University. She is very smart, and has everything going for her. Although she is the youngest ever cadet, she is already making quite an impression.
Life Before Legend gives readers a better understanding of why Day and June are the way they are. Marie Lu does a good job of describing how life is like in the Republic for two of the leading characters in the Legend series.
