LEGENDARY STAR-LORD #1 Review
Star-Lord! We’re talking ’bout Star-Lord! Legendary Star-Lord he loves outer space. Star-Lord! It’s time for Star-Lord! Legendary Star-Lord he’s cracking some jokes. Staaaaar-Loooord!
Okay, so theme songs may not be where my talent lies. It sounded good when I was singing it. Promise.
Star-Lord, leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Half human, half alien, half Han Solo. With this solo series, we are given a little more of a look at what makes Peter Quill tick. Is he a hero? Is he a crook? Yes.
We start out with seeing young Peter after his Mom dies and he is about to go into an orphanage. Then we skip forward 20 years and see Peter as Star-Lord fighting Badoon at an outer space orphanage. Turns out there is a gem there that everybody wants. Things don’t go as planned for Peter and we then move on to the “catch-up” part of our story. In just one page, we find out pretty much all we need to know about Peter Quill. He’s a teammate, lover, fighter, singer, drinker and friend. We also find out that he is resourceful and has a plan in the face of overwhelming odds.
It wouldn’t be a good first issue without the obligatory surprise and Humphries delivers on that. Overall, it’s a solid first issue script. I enjoyed seeing Star-Lord outside of the Guardians. So much of his history in that book is about him and his Dad, J-Son of the Spartax. Which is a huge part of his history, but I’m happy we get to see more about the character. Medina does a very solid job with the art. His aliens are perhaps better than his humans, but he does a good job of showing us the emotion and conflict that goes on behind Peter’s eyes.
I’m not convinced that a solo series was needed, but it is a good start and i’m interested enough to continue with it for a while.
