Milk, which is referred as one of the favorite drinks of kids and infants, can also have some adverse effects on the child or even adults. There are many people who witness stomach aches, motions or even digestion problem -after drinking milk. This is because they are allergic or intolerance to lactose, which is also called as the milk sugar, and is found in milk and milk products. Every health issuer has certain symptoms that denote there is some problem. The moment lactose intolerant drink milk or consumes milk products.

Symptoms of Lactose Intolerance:

  • Diarrhea.
  • Bloating
  • Intestinal cramps or discomfort
  • Gas

These symptoms are very similar to the symptoms of chronic bowel disease. It is said that almost 70 per cent of the people, who suffer from this problem don’t know the exact reason and think that they suffer from mere indigestion or stomach ailment. They forget or overlook the fact that they have these symptoms only after consuming any milk product or direct form of milk.

This ailment is said to be one of the most annoying sand serious ailments as the inefficiency to digest and absorb the lactose sugar may directly affect the intestine and its linings. This also is a sign of systematic disorders for the future. It also leads to the inefficiency of absorbing the important nutrients in the body. This makes the intestine and the digestion weak, making it prone to parasite attacks, bacteria, yeast and pathogenic bacteria. All this leads to several chronic diseases. Those suffering from this problem are also prone to other health issues like dairy allergy. It is said to be just one part of the iceberg. Dairy allergy is also very similar to lactose intolerance which people often get confused with.

How to diagnose it?

Those wanting to diagnose this test can take up a self test. One can drink at least two glasses of milk worth 8 ounces empty stomach and take notice to develop any intestinal problem or symptom in the next four hours. This test can further be repeated by eating cheese, but it does not contain that much of lactose.

If your stomach reacts to milk and not the cheese, then you probably might be suffering from lactose intolerance. It may also happen that one may react to both the products, this shows that you may be allergic to in general dairy products. But it is said that test like these may not help you jot down the exact reason and that person may be consuming lactose sugar as most of the things have this product which people may not even come to know.

One can also opt for the breath hydrogen test which can be done through the doctor or any clinic. This test has relatively accurate results and is very simple to do. This test has been marked as the ‘gold standard’ to detect lactose intolerance. For this test, one has to fast overnight and then one has to eat one dose of lactose and samples of the breath has to collected at timed intervals.
