Kristin Bauer is heading back to Canada this weekend for the Vancouver Fan Expo. The actress, who plays Pamela Swynford de Beaufort on the HBO series True Blood, recently chatted with the Vancouver Sun about True Blood, the fans, and how her character has helped potentially curb her swearing habit!
Bauer is no stranger to doing fan events like Vancouver Fan Expo. In 2012 she has participated in at least one every month if not more thus far. And inspite of the show’s popularity as well as her own, she tells the Vancouver Sun that she is continually surprised at how much the show makes fans want to give back. That’s one of the reasons she likes going to these events; to celebrate that dedication to the show. Kristin does it by signing lots of autographs and fielding lots of questions. One she gets quite often pertains to her co-star and good friend Alexander Skarsgård and how cute is he as cute in real life as he is on screen. Her answer to the female fans is that he’s cuter!
Kristin can relate to the sci-fi/comic book events personally too and not just from having done so many for True Blood’s sake because she liked the genre growing up:
“I loved anything supernatural or sci-fi. I loved science fiction books. Anything done well.”
That love hasn’t gone away either. The actress is active on Twitter and Facebook and has posted about her love of things like Battlestar Galactica and Watchmen. As for the dedicated following of True Blood, she says that it has something in it for everyone, including her mom:
“I find a lot of people who love X-Men and those types of things love us, and also people who love zombies love us. It’s a show for everybody. Even my mother, who is seventy years old.”
Her character Pam has grown in popularity thanks in part to Kristin’s talents and because of her character’s sometimes scathing yet extremely funny one-liners. Kristin says it’s easy for her to step into the role on set and admits the catharsis of it might actually have helped curbed her own penchant for swearing :
“Pam’s funny but she’s also accurate. I imagine we all enjoy seeing someone tell it like it is. For some reason it’s really easy to step into those shoes — those great pumps…I don’t think it was possible for me to swear more — I just love swearing. I’m terrible, though I’ve learned to curb it in public.”
This writer can attest to that! During a joint interview True Blood Fan Source and Kristin Bauer Online did with Bauer and her husband Abri van Straten, we asked them what their favorite curse word was as part of the Inside the Actor’s Studio portion of the interview. She would not say what it was but I’m fairly certain it’s a very popular expletive many people, including me, use daily.
Kristin also adds that while Pam might have a killer sense of fashion, she thinks of the character as a vegan who only eats free-range humans. As to why the show itself is so popular, she says it provides a means of escape for people and yet it’s also fun.
“I imagine [fans] love this stuff because it’s a great escape, but it’s also a metaphor for what we all deal with living on Earth…There’s a lot in the show that you can enjoy at a deeper level. Plus the surface is pretty darn fun.”
Pam will return to television when True Blood season 5 premieres on June 10.
Kristin will be at Vancouver Fan Expo this weekend April 20-21, 2012 and in addition to signing autographs she’ll also be doing a Q&A on Sunday from 2-3pm in the Electric Playground Theatre. So if you are in Vancouver go see Kristin! More information about the expo can be found here.
