Sometimes one of the hardest parts about selling a longtime home (after de-cluttering!) is letting go. Once you make the decision to sell, your house becomes a commodity rather than your home. The focus shifts away from having it reflect who you are and how you live to making it appealing neutral ground for a buyer to come in and make it their home.
It doesn't matter if you are downsizing or upsizing... moving across town or across country... selling a home is one of the most traumatic experiences in most people's lifetimes. It can also be one of the most exciting times, filled with the promise of new experiences and new beginnings.
Although it isn't always an option to buy before you sell, when it is it can help smooth the whole transition process... looking ahead to your new home can bring excitement into the bittersweet letting go of your current home.
I am working with sellers moving to a warmer state right now... happy to be leaving the cold weather on our doorstep... but also sad to be leaving behind the home that they lovingly designed and built.
For them the move will bring an exciting change in lifestyle as well as temperature, as they move from the suburbs to the historic heart of the city... from a car-centric community to a walkable, more pedestrian one. Looking forward to their new home helps make the whole transition more joyful and exciting.
Even if you can't buy first, I advise looking at potential homes in the area you plan to be moving to early in the process of planning to list your home for sale... it can help to just see some properties that could become your next home!
