Knob Creek Single Barrel 4775 Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

This is a 13-year-old Knob Creek Single Barrel (4775) that was aged in warehouse I (rick 11, 4th floor, Tier 2) at Jim Beam and selected as a store pick by PlumpJack in San Francisco. If you’ve read this blog for any amount of time you know I love these whiskeys because, more often than not, they end up being awesome.

The actual makeup, the mashbill of KC is no different than that of Jim Beam White. The difference between the two however are quite vast when you consider three key variables that lead Knob Creek to be Knob Creek and JB White to be JB White: age, proof and location in the warehouse.

In Jim Beam’s Words: Knob Creek Single Barrel 4775

Nose: Upon introduction it’s hard not to recognize Beam, except with less of the typical peanut brittle. Notes of hickory, dried moss, toasted oak and dark chocolate make this contemplative bourbon easy to be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Booker’s drinkers will love this as it has all the marks.
Palate: I knew there was some peanut brittle in there somewhere. More toasted oak, kettle corn, chocolate and brown sugar.
Finish: Lots of balance in this whiskey between the spice, sweet and savory and exceptionally smooth out the gate. Long and persistent finish with an unmistakable identity.”

Knob Creek Single Barrel 4775 Review: OVERALL

Knob Creek Single Barrel 4775 Review

This is without a doubt the weirdest Knob Creek I’ve ever had. There are things I’m getting in this whiskey I’ve never gotten in a KC before and that’s not a bad thing; it’s part of its charm. The aroma is weird and oaky with a cavalcade of interesting sweet and spice notes. The palate is more sweet than oaky but carries a huge dollop of peanut oil the aroma only had in whispers.

The finish starts oaky, turns to spice and then fades out on full peanut butter. That peanut note is the defining characteristic of the Knob Creek Single Barrel 4775 and is by far the most peanutty Jim Beam release I’ve had to date. Super interesting pick by the PlumpJack folks.

SCORE: 87/100 (B+)
