I hadn’t even heard of Kacey Musgraves until I started researching the 2014 Grammy nominees. I was correct in guessing the best new artist Grammy would go to Macklemore, but I wanted Kacey Musgraves to win (she was nominated in the category) the moment I listened to her “Same Trailer Different Park” album. She did go home with two Grammy Awards in the end for Best Country Album and Best Country Song for “Merry Go Round”. Not bad for a previous talent show contestant who placed seventh in the Nashville Star singing competition in 2007.
”Same Trailer Different Park” is a gentle album really. The kind that makes small town dreams and nightmares make sense and where you can almost see time standing still in the setting sun of the afternoon. The waitresses might be “Blowing Smoke” during their cafe shifts and life may spin its endless “Merry Go Round” in same circles and different lives, but none of it matters anyhow as somehow it’ll all be alright in the night. The prejudices, the trash-talking and the expectations (or lack thereof) of small town lives are all here in gorgeous 3 minute straight talking country songs. I would almost call her style Americana. Even if you are not a country music fan, I urge you to have a listen. Billboard magazine called her the favorite country singer of those who don’t listen to much country.
Kacey who was born in Texas and got her break in Austin (Texas) when she was signed to independent Triple Pop label. Prior to Triple Pop she had released three self-recorded albums. In 2012 she got the call to support Lady Antebellum during their Own The Night” Tour in the UK. (Why wasn’t I there??) 2012 was a lucky year for her anyway, as Mercury Nashville took notice and suddenly she had a major label backing her new album and Grammy award nominations on the horizon. Life can turn on a dime.
2014 is fast shaping to be a huge year for Kacey Musgraves if winning 2 Grammys wasn’t enough! She is nominated for 5 Academy of Country Music Awards and she is hitting the road with Lady Antebellum once more, in addition to solo shows. It won’t be long when it’s Kacey Musgraves heading the bill, I have a suspicion her support act days may be long gone soon. The latest single from “Same Trailer Different Park” is the quirky and happy “Follow Your Arrow” (video below) which urges us to “make lots of noise and kiss lots of boys…follow your arrow where ever it points”. Or as the last track on the album tells us “It is what it is ’till it ain’t anymore”. This is a beautiful album.
