After a swell of harsh cymbal noise a glorious chord is struck. The music immediately transforms one to a domestic dystopia, an alternative universe where family values of ’50s suburban America are still blindly adhered to. Assisted by an orchestra of strings and a cabaret-like rhythm section, Julia Holter sings and whispers in this almost through-composed single, her second in support of Loud City Song (out August 20th via Domino). After the listener is taken through each dreamy section as if they’re floating down a lazy river the song returns to where it started, the sound of cymbals.
