It’s the Way a Bouquet of Multi-colored Roses Reminds You of Home

By Melissa Boles @_mboles

When you’re a kid, everything is magical. The way a frog croaks or what a splash of water feels like or how dolls seem to come to life in your hands. If you press up off the back of the couch, chest out and hair trailing behind you, you’re Ariel. If you sing while you put your toys away, you’re Mary Poppins. You can build a family in your dollhouse and none of the kids will be afraid of the dog, even though you are. Every spider is Charlotte, every overgrown patch of weeds the entrance to a secret garden.

And then sometimes, the magic starts to fade. Books don’t take you to the amazing places that they used to – maybe you lost faith in hidden worlds when you never got your Hogwarts acceptance letter or when none of the armoires you dug through sent you to Narnia. Maybe someone laughed at you when you said that you still believe in Santa Clause or you recognized a parents’ handwriting on a letter. Or maybe you’re someone who was diagnosed with depression or anxiety or things became so overwhelming that magic was hard to see. Maybe you grew up and your childhood fondness for magic got packed away with the books and the dolls and the water toys.

For whatever reason, you’re probably reading this and thinking, “magic, ha. That stuff is for kids.”

But it’s not, love. It’s for you.

It’s the way the rain sounds on the pavement outside your window. The way your favorite nail polish color look shimmering in the light. It’s the way a bouquet of multi-colored roses reminds you of home, or how a scented candle fills the room. It’s the way someone calls you “love,” or buries their face in your neck every time they see you. It’s wind and lightning and snow (when you don’t have to go outside) and sun coming up over your favorite mountain. It’s watching a good tv show or a movie you loved as a kid; it’s re-reading your favorite book or finding a new favorite book.

I hope you take time this week to find the magic in your life. It’s there, love. It’s sitting right next to you in your car, resting amongst your belongings, or even on your favorite social media website (Instagram is a wonderful place for magic). And if you don’t know how to find it, sit back and let the magic come to you. I promise you’ll find it.
