If you grew up in the 80′s, you might know this song as the original version. If you’re a later generation, you probably know this song through a cover by No Doubt in 2003. This may even be the first time you’ve heard the original – I know I didn’t hear it until about seven or eight years after No Doubt’s release.
It’s My Life was released in January of 1984 from their second studio album of the same name. It went to #31 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and to #1 on Hot Dance Club Play. After not charting well in the UK, it was re-released on their greatest hits album in 1990 and finally went to #13.
The lyrics seem to describe a person who is unsure about their relationship and is questioning how the other person feels. At the same time, they try to look the other way at all the faults because they are afraid.
This song was also featured in the 1985 movie, First Born, starring Christopher Collet, Teri Garr, and Corey Haim. It can be heard in the scene where Collet’s character and his girlfriend (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) are shopping for clothes in a mall.
