I finished A Poetry Handbook by Mary Oliver on the last day of National Poetry Month.
The Madness Underneath by Maureen Johnson was hard to review without a spoiler for the earlier book, The Name of the Star. Fortunately, I never fully reviewed The Name of the Star, so I lumped the two books together and didn’t spoil either one. That was for my British Isles Friday post — check the link party there for other reviews of terrific books set in the UK plus the personal stories of trips with photos.
I finished, last night, the travel guide I was reading for Great Britain, DK Eyewitness Travel Great Britain. I’ll write up a review of that for a British Isles Friday post in the next few weeks. First, I’ll want to go through the bits I have marked to plan my trip.
I also had a DNF this week: Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare. I know lots of people love it, but I’m finding it so dark and slow and the attempts at humor strike me as mean. I made it through Clockwork Angel, but it wasn’t a favorite. I tried City of Bones once but couldn’t get into it either. So, I guess I’m done with this author. That always makes me feel bad, but Cassandra Clare has plenty of fans without me. And I have plenty of other books to choose from — Gail Carriger seems to have snuck in and taken over the niche of paranormal historical stories set in England for me.
Reading
Quiicksilver means mercury.
I’m really, finally, almost finished with Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson. Today or tomorrow so I can get it back to the library — I’ve had it so long that I can’t renew it anymore!
The book on my phone is Changeless by Gail Carriger. I’m surely almost done with that, too. Yes — 85% according to the Kindle app. One of the disconcerting things about e-books for me is being less aware that the end is looming.
Will Read
I’ve had a Gail Carriger book on my phone for weeks now, so I’ll surely download the next book in The Parasol Protectorate, Blameless.
I’ve yet to decide whether I’m going to read the next book in the series after Quicksilver. But I certainly need to read the next book for book club before then. So, that will be Sugar in the Blood by Andrea Stuart.
