What is Clubfoot in your baby?

Amongst the other birth defects, clubfoot is also known as equinovarus is a birth defect of the foot of your baby. Although this is a common problem in babies, however, 1 in 1000 babies across the world are born with this kind of structural defect. If your baby is in this condition, there’s an inward turn of your baby’s foot that causes its bottom to face sideways or even upwards. Going deeper, this problem occurs in your baby as the large tendon at the back of the ankle is too short. One of the feet of your baby might be affected by this kind of problem and initially, it wouldn’t be painful. However, with time, this defect might be a reason for pain to your little one. Your sweet little one might even face difficulty walking if the problem goes untreated.

What are Some of the Easy Treatment Methods for Clubfoot?

The treatment of your baby’s clubfoot include: 

Stretching and Casting

This treatment starts after the first 2 weeks of your baby’s life. Moreover, in this kind of treatment method, the surgeon stretches your child’s foot gently to put it in the correct position and attaches a long cast with the foot. This exercise gets repeated every 4 to 7 days till the problem is fully fixed. 

Stretching, Taping, and Splinting

In this method, your baby’s foot is gently stretched and a tape and splint is attached to keep it in position.

Bracing

In this method, special kinds of shoes are connected by a metal bar. Wearing which your baby’s foot remains in the correct position.

You can even take your child for surgery if your child’s problem seems to be severe. You can also prevent this problem from occurring in your child, by getting regular check-ups during your pregnancy, taking proper pregnancy vaccines, and regulating your lifestyle by not smoking or consuming alcohol.
