Tips to Keep Your Baby Warm During the Cold Season

Posted on the 06 December 2022 by Prapti Chauhan

Winter is here and you must keep your baby warm. We understand that it is a challenge to make your baby wear warm clothes. Even infants are notorious for moving blankets away from their bodies after you tuck them in. However, as a parent, you should make sure that your baby stays warm and does not catch a cold during the winter season. Here are some tips for keeping your baby warm and cosy.

For Infants

  • Keep your infant indoors as much as possible during the winter season and you need to take care of your baby’s skin in winter.
  • Swaddle your baby firmly but not too tight at night. You can use a swaddling blanket for this.
  • If your infant kicks the blanket off frequently, put them in a baby sleeping bag.
  • Do not overload your baby with heavy woolen clothes as it could cause SIDS. You can dress them in light but warm layers of clothes instead.
  • Set your baby’s room temperature right. The room temperature should not be too hot or too cold.
  • Babies lose a lot of heat through their heads and hands. Use a soft baby cap and soft mittens to cover their heads and hands.
  • If you have to take the baby outside, wrap them well in layers. You can hold them in your arms to keep them warm.

For Toddlers

Keeping your toddler warm during winter is way more challenging. Toddlers are always active and they don’t like to wear too many layers. As a parent, you have to balance the layering of clothes. Here are some helpful tips.

  • The base layer should always be soft cotton. Even in winter, toddlers sweat a lot, as they are always running and jumping. The base layer of cotton will help absorb the sweat.
  • The middle layer should be synthetic, or polyester.
  • The third layer is usually wool or fleece.
  • The outer layer should be a waterproof jacket or coat.
  • If there is no snow or rain, you can avoid the jacket.
  • Make your toddler wear woolen socks and boots.
  • Gloves are important to keep their hands warm

Your toddler may remove layers, so make them wear clothes that fit snugly. Do not force them to wear too many layers of clothes. If they say that they are feeling warm or hot, remove layers. When you find your child playing a lot, check if they are sweating. If they are sweating profusely, remove layers.
