Irish Whiskey Cocktail: TWJ’s Perfect Tipperary

TWJ's PerfectTipperary

Here at TWJ headquarters (AKA my apartment in Los Angeles), we love a good Tipperary, but over the course of the the month I’ve been playing around with it and came upon what is my favorite way to consume this lovely cocktail. A version I’ve now dubbed TWJ’s Perfect Tipperary.

The first thing I did, which is always my go-to move, was to increase the amount of whiskey in the cocktail. I love the way a good single malt works vs a blend in the regular Tipperary so I was using Egan’s 10 Year Single Malt Irish Whiskey to play around with this one and 1.5 ounces ended up bringing a nice balance to the cocktail. After that I tested out changing the level of Chartreuse and quickly realized an ounce was still the perfect amount for this drink.

The only ingredient left to mess with after that was the vermouth and the first thing I thought of was the way I like my Manhattans; perfect. Which means using 1/2 sweet and 1/2 dry vermouth and guess what… it was perfect. By increasing the amount of whiskey by 1/2 an ounce and switching to a mix of 1/2 dry and 1/2 sweet vermouth it brings down the sweetness of the cocktail and for my tastes delivers a well balanced, flavorful and aromatic cocktail. The only thing I’d recommend adding is a twist of Orange peel, but even if you don’t it’s still going to be a tasty drink!

TWJ’s Perfect Tipperary Cocktail Recipe

  • 1.5 oz Irish Whiskey (43%+ single malt recommended)
  • 1 oz Green Chartreuse
  • .5 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • .5 oz Dry Vermouth
  • Stir with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

Cheers!
