Iran Won’t Suspend Uranium Enrichment: Hassan Rouhani

Posted on the 18 June 2013 by Azharnadeem

Newly-elected Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said that his country is ready to demonstrate more transparency on its nuclear programme, but made it clear that uranium enrichment won’t be suspended.

“Our nuclear programmes are completely transparent,” Mr Rouhani, a reformist-backed moderate cleric who won Iran’s presidential poll race on Saturday by securing more than 50% votes, told a packed hall in the capital Tehran.

“But we are ready to show greater transparency and make clear for the whole world that the steps of the Islamic Republic of Iran are completely within international frameworks,” he said.

Rouhani described the sanctions imposed over country for refusing to halt its nuclear activities as “unfair”.

Iran has always insisted that its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful but Israel and Western powers suspect that the country is trying to build the nuclear weapons.

Rouhani, during his election campaign, criticized Iran’s current hard-line policy towards West over its nuclear programme, and vowed to change it with “moderation and wisdom”.

Israel, the biggest rival of Iran, has called the world not to withdraw its current assertive attitude towards Iran despite of the election of a moderate president.
