Iran on Sunday launched its own video-sharing website to compete against YouTube, the state television said.
The website ‘Mehr’ (http://www.mehr.ir), seeks to promote Iranian and Islamic culture and artists. The language of website is Persian.
“From now on, people can upload their short films on the website and access (IRIB) produced material,” the deputy chief of IRIB Lotfollah Siahkali said.
The introduction of new website is seen is as a massive step from Tehran to break away from Western Web, whose high-profile websites Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have already been blocked by the Islamic Republic.
Alleging the western bloggers and governments for waging a “soft war” against them, Iran are aiming establish a walled-off national intranet detached from the worldwide Internet but according to the experts of cyber-technology said it would be impracticable to completely break away from it.
The United States and western countries have repeatedly accused Iran of seeking to develop an ‘electronic curtain’ to cut its nation off from the world.
