Introducing: Chikimiki

By Lesassorties @LesAssorties

Chikimiki founder Elise Dealmeida’s fanciful designs are meant for women who embrace their individuality and want to express their personal spirit to the world. As a true Manhattanite, Elise is a keen supporter of the “Made in New York” initiative; her collections are conceived, developed and manufactured – including the intricate hand-stitched embroideries – entirely in the Big Apple. Her company is also doing its part to give back to people in need, as 10% of her brand’s profits are donated to Bookfriends, a charitable organization which sends books to schools and libraries in Africa. We caught up with Elise to discuss her rapidly growing label, and building and promoting a fashion brand.

What were you doing before Chikimiki?

As a design director for over 20 years, I have gained a lot of experience launching successful brands. I felt a void, and wanted to create only pieces that I absolutely love, that are timeless and beautiful. I want you to feel special when you wear my clothes.

What is your design philosophy and where do you find inspiration?

My belief in matching one’s looks with their inner personality shines throughout the brand ethos, from the collection’s aesthetic to the company motto: “Be Kind. Be Different” is a daily reminder to live life in an extraordinary way.

What is the perception of color in your work?

A harmonious clash of the colors appearing in the spectrum.

How much does your personal style affect your designs?

My personal style affects the silhouettes and shapes I use to mimic the movement of nature.

You recently introduced your “chikikitty” hats. Are you planning to expand to accessories too?

Yes, the “chikikitty” hats were quite popular because of the duality of being a hat and a scarf. I love accessories.

Tell us a few words about your collection “Cozy Knits.” What was the inspiration behind it and what are your expectations of it?

I loved the handmade and slow-fashion aspect of the chunky knits. I hope to expand it for people to be able to afford it.

How do you handle criticism from the media and buyers?

Very lightly, with a drink!

How do you build awareness of your brand? Do you do shows or presentations?

I love social media because they connect the whole world as one. Chikimiki is loved by the international community. Without social media and public relations, I would have never had access to all these amazing opportunities or exposed people to the Chikimiki world. Stylists and editors see the collection and love it!
I am not doing runway shows yet, I want the brand to grow organically; but maybe next year? I will take part in Tranoï here in NYC in September, and a trade showroom in China.

Your company donates 10% of the profits to Bookfriends. How did you reach this decision and how important is giving back to you?

For me, it’s all about giving back and helping children gain knowledge. Our children are our future. We have to cater to them.

What’s next for you and your brand?

Continue creating magical collections that push all boundaries; gain recognition in the United States as well as internationally; and continue helping children not only in Africa but all over the world.
