Abstract is a personal project of Anna Molteni. The name reflects clearly the designer’s philosophy when making the scarves; “abstract” pictures are printed on fabrics based on the motion blur technique. Each product features the print of a single photographic shot, which makes every scarf unique, and all scarves are designed and crafted in Italy. With a background in Industrial & Fashion Design, Molteni embarked on the journey of professional research and study of textiles, building imaginary mixed media. Together with her passion for photography, this gradually bloomed into a profession. She has worked for Andrea Incontri, Marithè Francoise Girbaud, Costume National, Viabizzuno, Pijama among other fashion brands, and is currently a scientific co-worker at the Polytechnic School of Milan in the Fashion Design department. We caught up with her to discuss the early beginnings of her brand, producing locally and her future plans.

How did you get into designing scarves?

The first pieces were produced after a personal quest for printing photographs on the theme of experimentation of abstract movements. There was no upstream commercial project. The result was exciting and aesthetically seductive, so I began a small production of silk scarves.

You worked for fashion companies before launching your brand. Do you think you would have done things differently if you had launched your brand upon graduation?

Yes of course! During the first years of work, I learned to rationalize creativity, objectively pick proposals and deal with the production phase. And that’s an exciting, ongoing challenge.

What are the main materials you use? Does the way prints look on fabric influence this decision?

We first started printing on silk, which is the perfect textile for two reasons: its timeless and precious fiber ensures perfect color rendering; in addition to that, it is historical fabric of the Como district, where I grew up – and I don’t just mean professionally.
Later we tried printing on wool, cashmere and fabric blends to give final products a different look, and offer new proposals to our customers.

How do you decide on the colors you will choose for each collection?

Just from looking around!

Your products are made in Italy. How is that important to you?

It’s essential. It’s important for me to have the opportunity to follow all stages of production personally in a very short time, and work together with suppliers to build a unique product.

Would you say that your work reflects your personality?

Totally!

Are you planning to expand into other designs than scarves?

Possibly. For the last summer collection, we had already introduced silk maxi T-shirts as part of a capsule collection. We want to focus on scarves and shawls for now.

What are your future plans?

Enjoy Abstract! I intend to continue to experiment with fabrics and prints, find new solutions to wear on the neck, and introduce the brand to as many people as possible in order to learn hear their thoughts and feelings and keep them as a useful feedback.
