Instagram Or, Ahem, IG

By Bertyc @bertyc
I finally get it. Instagram is also known as 'IG'. Saying 'IG' in your head will make you go into uncool-mum-mode, trying to be down with the kids, when you're not even a mom. Anyway, this is a world where I have decided people like to post mostly:
Pictures of their latest meal (macarons are particularly popular)
Pictures of their children
Pictures of their dogs (now I want a dog)
Pictures of themselves looking fabulous (if you're a 20-something woman from New York, this is 99% of your pictures I think)
For me: where I get to put pictures of fabric, crafts, flowers, floral fabric, floral based crafts, and the odd meal. And maybe one day a picture of myself.
For ages I didn't understand.  Typical reaction:
Why do I care what Sam from Sheffield is eating?
Why do I want to see where Mandy from Manchester is shopping?
Why should I care what Gertrude from Glasgow is knitting?
As an aside, do you like my alliteration?  Ahem, back to the matter in hand:
I'm here to say that IG, despite the shudder-worthy nickname, is fun.  And, just like Twitter, when people respond to what you post, or when you see something that strikes a chord or looks particularly beautiful, it's really exciting.
So now I get it and it's completely addictive. You want to beautify everything pretty you see or eat with one of those 'vintage' lenses, you want to show everyone how beautiful your knitting project/child/sofa is.
It's so addictive, it's a glimpse into other people's lives, it's being able to share your life, it's being able to glamorise even the most simple biscuits you made (see below), it's a lovely way to share what's going on in your world.
I love being able to see what's going on in Philadelphia with Veronika (ticktockvint on Instagram), or knowing what's going on in Florida with Oh Dear Drea (ohdeardrea) or seeing what Alice and Elfie (aliceharold) are up to.
Instagram will let you to do all these things and more!
