I'm Back. I Hope...

By Babyjandbean
It's been a while since I've posted. Why? Because I am really, unbelievably tired.
Bean has never slept well but his sleep recently went from bad to even worse than I ever imagined possible. He's waking up every 30-60 minutes screaming and when he is asleep, he is thrashing around and not restful at all. SOMETHING is waking him and I'm not 100% certain the cause. I don't believe it's entirely behavioral because he doesn't get anything out of waking (he sleeps in bed with us for now) other than a stern, "Bean go to sleep." We're done with night nursing and have been for a while so...
Anyway, add Bean's therapy, Baby J's preschool schedule and life to the mix and I've just been too worn out to do much of anything else.
But writing is good for me. It's a nice release and helps me organize my thoughts. And I have a lot of great ideas for posts. So, I am making a renewed effort to post more frequently. I would like to get back to a daily post but I'll probably ease in to that.
As for Bean and his sleep issues, he is most definitely having a bad reflux flare. I talked with his GI today and he doesn't want to increase his meds because he is already on significant doses but he did suggest increasing Bean's melatonin. I'll try that tonight.
I'm also looking in to periodic limb movement disorder. Another Williams syndrome mom posted on a support group that her child was recently diagnosed with an iron deficiency and that can cause limb movement disorder.  Once she started supplementing iron, her child started sleeping much better.
I have read up on the symptoms and it fits Bean to a tee. His iron has been tested in the past and it was normal but apparently, the regular iron test doesn't always show the specific deficiency. You have to test for serum ferritin. So, since Bean has some bloodwork scheduled for the beginning of October, I'm working on getting the docs to order this test, too.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the answer was that simple?
We are also making a renewed push to get him sleeping on his own to eliminate the behavioral component. Over the last two nights, I got him to sleep on the giant pillow pet (from Costco) for about an hour by himself. I had to lay with him til he fell asleep but I was actually able to get up and away for about an hour. That hasn't happened in a long time and is huge progress.
We're hoping to make the transition to his own room/bed in the next couple of weeks but we need to make sure we know what we are dealing with medically.
In the meantime, I'm really stinking tired but it feels so, so good to be writing about it again...
