I Drove All Night by Cyndi Lauper.

I heard this song yesterday in an 80′s video montage on VH1 Classic. Is it just me or does her voice sound different from song to song? She hits notes that I didn’t even know she could hit. Her vocals are deeper all together in this and I have to say, she really has a great voice. I feel like it wasn’t showcased as much in Time After Time and Girls Just Want to Have Fun and it surprises you.

I Drove All Night was released in 1989 from Cyndi’s third album, A Night to Remember. Written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, it was intended for Roy Orbison who recorded it in 1987. However, his version wasn’t released until 1992 and by then, Cyndi’s had already become a hit. She chose to record the song because she liked the idea “of a woman driving, of a woman in control.”

The single went to #6 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and it also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Rock Performance. The song was successful in other countries as well charting at #2 in Italy, #7 in the UK, and #10 in New Zealand among others.

Above is the official music video.
