I Bit into the Sky

Posted on the 26 November 2014 by Yamini
Staring, stalking, poking, pinching
a regular part of my life
a part of being a woman
in this no country for woman
Fear is a daily exercise
lest one forget one's limits
Yes I hold my heart on my sleeve
in a very literal sense
for some part of my body may be violated any moment
A woman is a thing of beauty
that is where it all begins
she is a "thing"
to look
to touch
to play around
she is a "thing"
nothing human about it
I'd say a woman is an act of violence
of years of socialization process
of teaching her of her inferiority
of educating her about her servitude
of grooming her "beauty" for consumption
of instilling fear in her
of training her to get used to the world
she is an act of violence
in thought, act, deed.
Me, a product of this world
used to watching my back
of people commenting, stalking, touching, peeping
of constantly being under surveillance
I found another world
where I could sleep in a park
in a broad day light
and no body cared
I was still a woman
but nobody stared
Suddenly the microscope was taken off
I was free
from the slavery
from the violence
I bit into my share of the sky
for the first time ever
oh! it was intoxicating
In a moment
I had the world in my hands
I could empathize with all the caged birds
all the animals of the zoo
all the lab rats
I understood how all violence is connected
As a victim I stand in solidarity against all violence
Now I long for a world
a world free from violence
keep your nation to yourself
keep your religion to yourself
keep your morality to yourself
keep your success, family, love, care
I don't need god either
society, please stay away
For now I have tasted the sky
I will settle for nothing less!
