How We Met — a GenFab Post

Rick and I met in 1989 when I interviewed him for a job — he got it!

He wanted to move back to Missouri from Wisconsin to be near his mom after his dad was killed in an accident. Since he hadn’t told his current employer that he was on a job hunt, the small computer firm where I worked arranged a Saturday interview, filling the slate with whoever was willing to come in and talk to a potential new hire.

I was newly separated, living alone in an apartment within walking distance of the office. It wasn’t unusual for me to come in to work on a Saturday, anyway. I dressed more professionally than normal for a Saturday, determined that this interview would be part of a program I was instituting for myself to concentrate on my career now that my marriage had failed.

And, then, Rick walked in my cubicle. I thought he was so cute! I got all flustered and talked too fast and ran through my questions for him so quickly that I ran out before we were half way through the time allotted. I ended up giving him a tour of the office just to kill some time before his next appointment.

Somehow, he liked me anyway. He got the job in the spring, started staying at my apartment a couple of months later, and invited me to move into his house when he bought it in the fall.

Since it’s Christmas time, I thought I would share a couple of photos from our first Christmas season. Rick was strictly a “real tree” guy, but I have allergies, so he got to put together his first artificial tree. And, then we did it again at my parent’s house.

Joy and Christmas Tree

Me with the Christmas Tree at my parent’s house in Louisiana, Missouri. 1989. Rick took photos of the whole process of putting it together and we made a play-by-play booklet for my parents.

Two years later, we had a Christmas-themed wedding. This week, we celebrate our 21st anniversary.
