Did you know you can make your own Panko?! Yes, it’s true! No need to hand over a couple bucks for a tiny box of breadcrumbs. With a $1 loaf of white bread, and about 15 minutes of your time, you can turn out a huge batch of Panko to last you for a long while. If you’ve ever used Panko, you know how much crunchier it makes anything. These coarse Japanese breadcrumbs make food extra crispy, due to the large surface area of each crumb. Once I started using Panko, I never went back to regular breadcrumbs. Try out this recipe and you’ll see why!
Ingredients
1 loaf of sliced white bread
Equipment
Food processor with the shredding blade
Baking sheets (2)
Directions
Grind the bread in the food processor using the shredder blade. Divide the breadcrumbs between 2 baking sheets. Place in a 250 degree oven for 10-15 minutes, tossing occasionally, until the breadcrumbs are dry but not browned. Break up any big clumps with your fingers. Store in a plastic food storage bag or other airtight container.
