Other causes of dandruff includes skin problems like eczema, oily skin that could extend up to the scalp area, psoriasis, poor hair hygiene and hypersensitivity of scalp to certain hair products.

Since dryness of the scalp is the most common cause of dandruff, it is very important to keep your hair hydrated and clean. When we say hydrated, it means proper hair care should be observed. Excessive use of shampoos, hair gels, sprays, hair colors can also affect our scalp thus may contribute to dandruff.

Here are the things you can do to get rid of dandruff:

1. Shampoo your hair regularly. Finding the right shampoo can be a pain in the neck so it is very important to know your hair type and choose the shampoo that best suits you. Shampoos like Clear and Head & Shoulder are making reputation in maintaining dandruff-free hair. If you have oily skin, you can shampoo your hair everyday using mild and gentle shampoos. Oily hair have the ability to accumulate dirt and dust that could be one reason for dandruff. If you have dry skin, shampooing three times a week can be sufficient but make sure to use hair conditioner on the days that you don’t shampoo your hair.

2. Use hair oil to massage your scalp. Let it sit for few minutes before rinsing. It will help keep your scalp hydrated.

3. Avoid using harsh hair products and if you must make sure to wash your hair right away and don leave it on your hair for overnight.

4. Salty water is a big factor for dandruff. Those who use water through desalination process have a high risk of getting dandruff. Wash your hair with generous amount of water. Remnants of shampoos and other hair products’ ingredients might leave traces on your scalp which can cause flakes.

There are also medicated shampoos available in the market which will relieve dandruff. They are proven to be effective in controlling dandruff and relieve itchiness as well. The usual instruction is two to three times per week. Here are some to mention:

- Ketoconazole Shampoos
- Selenium Sulfide
- Tar blend Shampoos
