How to Change a Bedridden Person’s Diaper

If your incontinent loved one is bedridden, you’ll need to learn how to properly change his/her diaper. Prompt and frequent changes are crucial in preventing painful bedsores and rashes.

Before you start cleaning, make sure to inform your loved one that you are about to change his/her diaper. Throughout the whole process, kindly explain to them what you’re doing, so they won’t be alarmed.

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

1. Gather the essential incontinence products and cleaning supplies. This includes an absorbent adult brief with tape tabs, waterproof underpad, disposable washcloths, barrier cream, disposable gloves, and plastic bag.
2. If your loved one is not already using an underpad, you’ll want to slide one underneath to catch any messes and help keep the mattress clean. Put on your gloves and gently roll your loved one to one side to slide the pad in place. Avoid trying to lift the person as you might injure him/her or yourself.

3. Unfasten the soiled diaper and roll the front of the diaper inwards, towards the crotch to keep contents from falling out. Gently turn the individual on the side away from you, so you can easily pull the diaper out. Fold the diaper in itself and discard into the plastic bag.
4. Use the wet wipes to gently clean the diaper area front to back. Be thorough, making sure to get all the nooks and crannies, but try not to rub too hard to avoid putting pressure on the fragile skin. Roll the individual to the other side, so you can clean any areas that you weren’t able to reach. If applicable, pull the soiled underpad out and discard. Lay a fresh underpad to protect the sheets and mattress from leaking diapers or adult bedwetting.
5. Check for bed sores and diaper rashes, and then apply barrier cream onto the perineal area.
6. Make sure the skin is dry before putting on a clean diaper. Again, roll the individual to one side and place the new diaper under so that the back of it reaches near the hips. Roll your loved one back onto their back, and smooth out any wrinkles or bunches in the diaper. Then, fasten the brief so that it fits snugly around the waist and legs.
7. Dispose everything in the plastic bag and tie it tightly to keep the smell in. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap.

Changing diapers of a bedridden person can be tricky and requires lots of patience. Over time, as you get more practice, you’ll be able to thoroughly and efficiently complete the whole process with ease.
