How to Blog

By Actuallystrange @ActuallyStrange

Well, how to blog if you’re me. :)

I started this blog four weeks ago. I’ve learned a lot about what works, and doesn’t, for my blog since that time.

What Works:

1) Posting every day

I post at least once per day because I’m realistic. I know that, until my blog has existed for at least a few years, I can’t expect people to stay interested if I take a break (unless I have an AMAZING story to share when I come back).

2) Writing to write

I am not an expert in anything. I’m not trying to sell anything and I’m not trying to promote myself in a certain occupation. I write because writing, along with prayer, keeps me sane. Also, increased practice at writing is valuable to me.

3) My niche of “My life plus my thoughts”

I don’t want to write just a personal blog but I also don’t want random mumblings about any issue that comes to mind. However, it’s amazing how combining a personal blog with mumblings about random issues can increase a blog’s structure.

4) Blogging anonymously

The most you will ever know about me is my age, gender, and what city I live in. That’s it. Please see my ‘About Me‘ page for a more detailed reason of why I don’t post under my actual name.

What doesn’t work

1) Writing about things I don’t care about

I’ve found that I do my best writing when I write about things that are important to me, whether it’s my life or my opinion on an actor. I’ve written a couple posts that were popular but I just didn’t care about the topic. If you don’t care about what you’re writing than what’s the point?

2) Constantly checking my stats

I need to write high-quality posts and do everything I can to increase traffic. I think this’ll be easier if I don’t check my stats until 11:59PM. It’s distracting. Besides, I tend to place a higher value on comments than I do on page views.

:D
I can’t believe it’s been four weeks. I’m looking forward to writing more tomorrow and thanks for reading this today!
