How to Bargain for Cheap Hotels and Hostels in Hong Kong

Prices in Hong Kong

Although Hong Kong is not perceived as one of the cheapest travel destinations by many, it’s a very affordable city when it comes to accommodation. It offers a great variety of budget hostels and hotels and if you know where to stay, you can save up to $10 a day on your accommodation which you can spend on world’s famous dim sum, which are small, bite-sized portions of food that are often served in traditional bamboo steamer baskets!

Best places to stay in Hong Kong on the cheap

#1 Chungking Mansions.

If you are short of cash, that’s the place you should head to in the first place. It offers the cheapest accommodation in the city and it has 5 different blocks (from A do E) full of small and cozy hostels providing decent Wi-Fi in each room.

The building is located at 36-44 Nathan Road, very close to Tsim Sha Tsui station. If for some reason you get lost, ask locals for direction. They will show you the way as everyone knows this place. The shorter you stay there, the cheaper your room will be. For those who want to stay just one night, the price should be around HK$100 for a single room.

#2 Budget Hostels.

There is one budget hostel we would like to recommend to everyone who is staying in Hong Kong for more than 1 night. The Y-loft hostel located on Hong Kong Island offers cozy rooms at affordable prices and you can grab a dorm bed in the Hong Kong hostel at Causeway Bay for $21.50 per night. It may sound a bit expensive, but the rooms are spacious, neat and clean and there is a great Wi-Fi connection.

#3 Hourly Hotels.

Hourly hotels are not advertised on-line. Therefore booking them in advance is not easy. These are places where you pay per hour to stay there, mainly used by locals for obvious reasons. However, if you need a 3-4 hour nap before your flight, you can ask locals for direction and pay much less than you would pay when staying somewhere for 24 hours. Prices start from as low as 30 HKD ($4 US) per hour but you can bargain down for a bulk stay of 8 hours of course it can be cheaper if you are willing to accept a lower standard of room.

10 Bargaining tips for getting a cheap room in Hong Kong:

1. Walk around Chungking Mansions looking like you needed a room to stay.

2. Wait till an Asian guy approaches you and asks how much you would be able to pay for a night.

3. Say you don’t know and ask him for the good price (he will tell you that he has a very good room for 250-300 HKD).

4. Say it is way too expensive and your budget is no more than 100 HKD per night.

5. He will say no way so you need to walk away.

6. He will certainly start following you asking how many nights you want to stay in Hong Kong.

7. Say you are here only for one night.

8. He will agree for your 100 HKD immediately.

9. Go with him and check the room.

10. If he tries to find a last minute excuse to get extra 20-50 HKD, just refuse and go back to step 1.

If you want to stay more than one night there, it’s never a problem to extend it the following day for the same price or find another deal.

As you can see, finding a cheap room when in Hong Kong is a tough mission, but it can save you a lot of money and in a city as expensive as Hong Kong, every cent matters, trust me.
