How Did I Not Already Know That DisneyXD Is Reviving DuckTales?

Posted on the 07 March 2016 by Weminoredinfilm.com @WeMinoredInFilm

I was a kid. In the late 80s. And early 90s. I watched DuckTales (woo-oo). It was great. I played the video game. It was fun.

In fact, those are all the types of short sentences and sentence fragments I would have written way back when I was a youngen’ watching DuckTales (woo-oo) and somehow never wondering where Huey, Dewey, and Louie’s mother was. I previously wrote about my nostalgic fondness for this series in 2013 when it was announced that the old video game was getting a remake. In the years since, I apparently missed a pretty big announcement because until today I had no idea DisneyXD was reviving DuckTales (woo-oo).

According to SlashFilm, this new take on the old animated classic was first announced in February 2015, at which point the official Disney press release said:

Whether you grew up on the Disney Afternoon, or you’re just a fan of iconic Disney animation, we think you’ll be excited to learn that an all-new DuckTales [woo-oo], an animated comedy series based on the Emmy Award-winning series treasured by a generation of viewers, has been ordered for launch in 2017 on DisneyXD channels around the world. Set to be produced by Disney Television Animation (DTVA), the new series will again star Disney’s enduringly popular characters: Scrooge McDuck, his grandnephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and Donald Duck. The announcement was made today by Marc Buhaj, Senior Vice President, Programming, and General Manager, Disney XD.

Buhaj said, “DuckTales [woo-oo] has a special place in Disney’s TV animation history, it drew its inspiration from Disney Legend Carl Barks’ comic books and through its storytelling and artistic showmanship, set an enduring standard for animated entertainment that connects with both kids and adults. Our new series will bring that same energy and adventurous spirit to a new generation.”

Well, gosh, that sounds swell. Totally missed that press release, though. My introduction to this news came an hour ago when I saw this image from the new series on TheWrap:

DuckTalesSadly, there’s now new information to report beyond the fact that this image is out there, and it makes the show look like a lot of fun. More importantly to animation fans, based off of this image alone it would appear as if the new DuckTales might be traditionally animated instead of computer-animated. That’s not the norm anymore. However, Disney reviving an old 2D animated property with a modern 2D version is not unprecedented. Case in point, the Disney Channel has been rolling out a series of 2D animated Mickey Mouse short cartoons for a while now:

The new DuckTales is set to debut sometime in 2017 on DisneyXD.

Finally, if you noticed that I kept putting “(woo-oo)” after the title “DuckTales” in the above post, and you assumed I was referencing the old show’s theme song you were right. If not and you didn’t get the reference, I probably should have explained that a lot sooner, huh?

Let’s go out with the old theme song:
