Today, you can hardly find a make-up routine without the use of face serums. This beauty-care product has gained immense popularity in the past few years. These serums are available in a variety of flavors and have replaced creams and lotions. There are several beauty brands that sell face serums but what are they actually made of?

What Is a Face Serum?

A face serum is a nourishing liquid moisturizer that can be applied on the face. Unlike your regular creams, face serums are lightweight and easy to apply. The most commonly used ingredients in face serums are hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, alpha-hydroxy, and glycolic acids.

Pros of Using a Face Serum

1. Lightweight

Face serums are absolutely lightweight when compared to conventional creams and lotions.

2. Non-Greasy

Since face serums are usually water-based, they easily get absorbed into the layers of the skin. Even the oil-based face serums don't leave a greasy residue on the skin.

3. Easy Application

As mentioned before, they easily get absorbed into the skin. It spreads evenly all over the face and hence, can be applied without much effort.

4. Makeup-Friendly

No matter what your makeup is, a cream-based moisturizer might be too heavy on the skin. On the other hand, face serums nourish your skin and close the pores on your face for a non-messy makeup application.

5. Reduces Wrinkles

Face serums are not only used before applying makeup products but can also be used to reduce wrinkles. They tighten the skin and help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

6. Diminishes Acne Scars

The skin-lightening properties of face serums help diminish blemishes and scars left by acne. Especially, the ones with glycerin are extremely useful in reducing acne scars when applied over a period of time. But, if your acne is a result of some medical condition, it is best to consult a dermatologist before applying face serums.

7. Nourishes Dry Skin

Face serums are nothing but water-based moisturizers and hence, treats dry skin by nourishing it.

Cons of Using a Face Serum

1. Skin Conditions

When you have skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, it is not a great idea to use face serums unless advised by a dermatologist. Some of the ingredients might irritate the already affected skin and hence, it is best to avoid serums if you have any of the above-mentioned skin conditions.
2. Cannot Replace Sunscreen Lotions

Face serums are just skin nourishers and don't have SPF and so don't offer protection from the sun. This is the reason why they cannot replace sunscreen lotions.
