This time of year brings cool autumn nights, sweaters, boots, lots of warm spices and cozy lattes by the fire. Unfortunately, this time of year can also bring some seasonal coughs and colds. Whenever I'm feeling under the weather, my mom would whip up an warm, spicy, fragrant ginger tea that she learned to make from her mother in law (my Abuelita Carmen).
If we have an upset stomach, sore throat, or cough that just won't go away, my Mami's ginger tea latte always does just the trick. She takes lots of fresh ginger and steeps it in water with spices like cinnamon, cloves, turmeric and star anise. A pat of ghee and a slash of milk or cream finish off the recipe, which gives a luscious creaminess to the tea latte. Each ingredient in this tea has a medicinal property that makes it a cure all of the cold weather sniffles.
The ghee helps coat the throat, which soothes itchy, sore throats. Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and increases alkalinity and circulation in the body. Ginger also contains anti-inflammatory properties that may help manage or reduce your risk for many conditions, including sore throats. Ginger is also believed to have antimicrobial properties that may help fight infections (bacterial or viral), including those that cause sore throats. Cinnamon, cloves and star anise helps your body fight infections and repair tissue damage, due to the large load of antioxidants contained in each one.
As a busy working woman and a fitness instructor, I'm always looking for ways to boost my health and metabolism, so that I can avoid getting sick as much as possible. One of my must have ingredients to keep my health in check is ghee! What's that, you ask? Ghee is a type of clarified butter that is heated and reduced. What you're left with is the pure healthy fat - lactose free, dairy free and good for digestion and metabolism. I love using ghee anywhere I would use butter or oil. 4th and Heart Tava Organics Turmeric Ghee is delicious, light and buttery taste, and has a high smoke point for cooking. You can use it as a spread, to sauté, sear and bake, as well as for butter (bulletproof) coffee!
When I discovered 4th and Heart Tava Organics Turmeric Ghee at my local Publix, I was super excited to add this to my recipe. All 4th & Heart products are of the highest quality with superior taste and powerful certifications (non-GMO, Paleo, Gluten-Free, Keto). Turmeric Ghee has a sweet and subtle flavor profile with notes of nut, honeysuckle, and honey, and it adds a warmth to any dish.
Since my mom's ginger tea recipe already includes butter and turmeric, this was a great way to combine those ingredients into this recipe, which adds a deliciously creamy mouthfeel to this cozy beverage. My turmeric ginger tea latte is spicy, warm, fragrant, soothing and perfect at any time of day. I'm betting this might even replace your cup of morning coffee!
