If you read my New Years resolution post you'll know one of my resolutions was to save money, I spoke about certain things I wasn't going to buy etc but it got me looking into how we can save on things we literally couldn't be without. I'm talking about bills etc! Never a fun subject to broach but we had one statement through not long ago and realised just how much electric & gas we use up, I'm terrible at leaving lights on all the time, I can admit that, I'll walk upstairs and pop in the bathroom for something, then notice something in the bedroom and put that light on too, the remember I was doing something die stayed and before I know it there are 5 rooms all with lights on and it's also 1 in the afternoon...the same goes for switches, one thing we tried when we first moved in was turning everything off at the mains, it's all well and good turning the TV off but electricity still flows through and increases your bill! The same with the gas too, do you really need the heating on ALL day? It's much cheaper just to pop on an extra layer of clothing! We're quite lucky as we live in a mid terraced house, so when winter hits we only have the two external walls instead of three or four, plus when our neighbours have their heating on, we get insulated from both sides too! As Brits we tend to be a bit girlie when it comes to cold weather, the first sign of winter and boom the heating's on, and as innocent as we think that is, it's not always necessary! It's when that bill arrives through your letterbox and you panic!
Thankfully there are ways you can keep tabs on how much gas you're using, so you know just how much money you're just throwing away and learn how to save it instead! One of those ways is the Hive Active heating app, a fab way you can actually control your heating and hot water from your smart phone, wherever you are! You'll be able to see if the temperature in your home has dropped or risen, inside or outside! And what makes it better is because you're seeing a live indicator for your phone? You can change the settings instantly!
So if you've put your heating on a timer to turn on just before you get in from work, then your plans change and you have to run an errand on your way home, you can simply open the app and reset the time and temperature, no more heating an empty house, phew! This can save up to £150 every year on your energy bill, imagine what else that could buy you! That's 2 free food shops a year for us! Nice!
