Hip Hip Hooray, It’s a Birthday Week!

By Yourfamilysurvivalcoach @shari_brewer

There’s a birthday boy in our household this week. Hip, Hip, Hooray! My Mr Middle Young Man is waving goodbye to 12 years of childhood and entering the land of teen, a kingdom of much change, many unknowns and wondrous adventures. He’s just a little bit excited. And a little bit sad too. This will be his first birthday away from either his Dad or I, as it lands smack bang during school camp. I’ve been trying to convince him it’ll be just like having the ultimate sleep-over birthday party – in a cabin with 5 or 6 of your closest mates and camp lasagne for tea! Not convinced, I don’t think.

To compensate, we’ve had all the birthday stuff a bit early this year, it managed to go on for days – right up until hopping on the bus for camp this morning. It was reasonably low key, quite in line with his nature, and at his request it’s looked like this …

Hip Hip Hooray, it’s a Birthday Week!

  • he baked and ate his own birthday cake! Nothing sparks the appetite like a green cake with blue icing and a trailer-load of sprinkles on top! He loved cooking it, but eating it more!
  • my teenagers want money – money is not so easy to wrap in any kind of way that it looks impressive, sorry, an envelope it was but the words of love were warm and sincere
  • spaghetti-bol for dinner one night (because that’s his favourite)
  • Subway for dinner another night (because that’s his favourite too)
  • friends to go to Laserzone with for all-out  laser warfare

Hopefully a transition birthday that he’ll remember, especially if camp is fun! (Sorry that there are no pics of the birthday boy. Would love to show him off, he’s gorgeous, but no photos of him on the blog at his request and I respect this.)

What do birthdays look like at your place? Are there balloons and whistles and lots of parcels? Games and special dinners? Do you have family birthday traditions to ensure a special day for the birthday boy or girl?
