Here’s a 50 Second Teaser for the Still-Uncast New Star Trek Show

It’s at moments like these that you have to decide how big of a fan you really are, how deep your obsession runs.

Earlier today, at the network upfronts CBS unveiled a teaser for its new Star Trek TV series which will debut on the network sometime next year before switching over exclusively to CBS All Access. This show doesn’t have an officially announced cast yet. It doesn’t start filming until sometime in the fall. There have already been countless op-eds arguing why Bryan Fuller is the perfect choice as showrunner as well as several juicy rumors (e.g., the show might utilize an anthology format, the first season could be set in-between Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and Star Trek Generations). What more is there left to say?

Well, the new teaser, which is pretty much a classic case of a network throwing something out there to basically say “Oh, btw, this show is going to happen, in case you hadn’t heard already,” gives us (drumroll please) the new logo!

Remember how I said this is when you get to decide how big of a fan you really are? This is what I am talking about. How much do you want to geek out over the very J.J. Abrams-esque logo in the teaser? Is there perhaps some slideshow you could make comparing it to the older, nearly identical logos? What about the orchestral score, which seems lifted out of a generic Hollywood blockbuster before seguing into the classic Jerry Goldsmith theme? Do you have a very strong opinion about that?

If so, more power to ya’. I just don’t have the heart for it right now, though.

Here’s the new teaser:

The most important part is the slogan at the end: “New Crews. New Villains. New Heroes. New Worlds.”

Note that they made “crew” plural, which might validate the rumor that about the new Star Trek being an anthology with a new crew each season. On the opposite end, “New Villains” seemingly contracts the rumor about war-hungry Klingons being the villains, thus bridging the gap between Undiscovered Country and Generations.

Wow. I guess I just found out how big of a fan I am: I’m seriously analyzing the grammar in a new slogan as some kind of desperate search for spoilers.

Where do you stand? Is this 50-second of nothing footage worth talking about? Or is it quite possibly the only pop culture-related item worth talking about for the foreseeable future?
