Hemorrhage (In My Hands) by Fuel.

I can’t believe this song is 11 years old now. It’s probably my favorite behind “Shimmer.” I remember that I always loved the use of colors in the music video. Bright, but not too bright. And it made the band’s lead singer, Brett Scallions, have glowing blue eyes. Awesome.

Hemorrhage (In My Hands) was released in September of 2000 from the band’s second album, Something Like Human. It went to #30 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and remains their most popular song to date. The album itself was certified double platinum in the United States and gold in Canada.

American Idol’s Chris Daughtry sang it on an episode and was offered the position of new frontman of Fuel because Scallions had previously made the decision to the leave the group. However, Daughtry declined the offer and eventually started up his own band.

Surprisingly, I wasn’t able to find any background on the song. Based on my own interpretation, the lyrics reflect a strong association to the past. It’s about a girl who is emotionally unstable and in danger of taking her life because she is so unhappy. The chorus could be a plea from the man asking her not to do anything rash because even though he isn’t as distraught as she is, he still needs her in his life.  However, it seems like the girl doesn’t care anymore and has given up on trying to find happiness.

Oh hold me now I feel contagious. Am I the only place that you’ve left to go? She cries her life is like some movie in black and white. Dead actors faking lines, over and over and over again she cries…
